CELEBRATING by a FRIEND: Pros and cons.

Category: Ceremony | Curiosity | Rite

I admit, sometimes it is not easy for a couple-to-be to have to choose who should perform the ceremony. I am referring to that specific situation where the couple decides that it will not be a professional celebrant, but a friend of theirs, an acquaintance, who will celebrate.

Of course it is, that for at least one of the couple the feeling will be that of “we’ve known each other all our lives, we’ve been friends since we were in school etc.” what better person to celebrate my wedding than you!

Some might then think that probably the ceremony performed by a friend will definitely turn out to be lighter and “drabber,” simpler let’s say less “constructed”

And these might be the PROs, but let’s come to the CONs

If you decide to choose an acquaintance or friend to perform your wedding make sure that he or she is at least inclined or able to speak in public and above all knows you both well !

Too often in the past I have seen “impromptu celebrants” who during the speech either sank into a sea of tears and totally lost control of their emotions, or gave monologues telling everyone perhaps their own personal story that binds them to one of the bride and groom.

Or again, being too ironic, really putting it too much on the laugh without having any head or tail in a concept!

Eh yes, I have seen a lot of that, but alas, it is a personal choice.

That is why we as a team also offer a very useful service of quick guidance and training just for those cases where there is a non-professional celebrant but the bride and groom wish to have for their day.

During the wedding the professional celebrant will also be present to avert the problem that very often happens namely: the friend who was supposed to celebrate withdraws at the last moment!
